Math in Focus

Updated on 12/13/11  Math Night
We had our first math night on Thursday, December 8th and it was a HUGE success.  Our parent participation was amazing.  I am not sure of the exact number of participants yet,  but our preliminary numbers had a parent sign in of around 200 parents!  All of our teachers worked extremely hard to plan informative and engaging sessions for parents to attend and learn about Math in Focus.  We ended our night of learning with pizza, drinks and prizes.  Here are some pictures from the night!

Updated on 11/7/11  Management of Base Ten Block Manipulatives

In the following video, you will see a way that one teacher has ensured that the use of base ten block manipulatives is a smooth and easy implementation.  Here are some things to know prior to watching the video.

1.  Each student has an individual bag of manipulatives containing ones units, ten rods and hundred flats.
2.  Pictures of hundred flats were premade and are used because there are not enough hundred flats for each student.
3.  Students work in pairs and have a bag of extra manipulatives to use between the two students.
4.  All other materials are put under desks, and there were no pencils or pieces of paper to accompany the manipulative part of the activity.

We are currently using the math program called Math in Focus: The Singapore Approach.  This program is structured so that students are experiencing math in concrete, pictorial and abstract ways to achieve mastery of math.  Students are taught in whole groups, and they are having guided practice of topics through the use of games, hands on activities and exploring math concepts.  Students are also working independently in class and through homework assignments to achieve math mastery.
